I saw the movie Infamous recently on HBO. It is fabulous. I really knew nothing about Truman Capote. He is played by Toby Jones by the way and incredible!
The story is about Capote’s very long and complex journey as to how he comes about to writing In Cold Blood.
He reads about a brutal slaying of a wealthy farming family of four in Kansas and is immediately intrigued by it. He decides to write an article about the murders for a magazine. But as time goes by, he becomes more intrigued by the murders and decides that a novel had to come out of it as well.
What I found most fascinating about the film is the very intimate relationship he forms with one of the two killers. It takes time but Capote earns the killers’ trust and their relationship develops over many years.
It takes him almost 10 years to complete it all because of the trials of the killers, etc. and just about destroys him as a person. As I said, he gets SO involved with it all, it just sucks the life out of him.
In Cold Blood is the last and most successful novel he ever writes. He wins a second Edgar Award for it. His later works are mostly collections of stories and articles.
I don’t want to give anything away so just watch it! It’s really good. I have to read In Cold Blood now, I think. Lol.
